Two years ago today...

I rifled through my old posts to see what I said on previous Valentine's Days. Not surprisingly, I said nothing, since I don't celebrate it in a typical way. But I did find something relevant in the files. Two years ago, my husband and I were in the Middle East, having going-away drinks with our manager on a project there. The guy gave us some great marriage advice over multiple beers in the lounge of a Western hotel. At the time, we had been married two months. Today, back in Los Angeles, it has been two years and two months, and I am just as eager to have dinner with the hubs tonight as I was then; giddy, excited, and hopeful he will be excited, too. I'm making Manifest Vegan's Bulgogi-style tofu, which has been marinating since last night. No, I'm not a vegan. I'm a killer recipe lover.

Read the old post here back when Burwell General Store was called Our Other Car Is A Camel. All those posts are now tagged on this blog as UAE, if you're interested in reading some Dubai adventures.

Whether you celebrate this day or not, it's always a good thing when you stop for a moment to think about and honor those who you cherish. Love to all of you!

  1. Cannot wait to start from the beginning:) I'd love to get to know the two of you better! We don't celebrate the V-Day in a typical manner, either, but I don't think my husband is going to weasel his way out of March 8th. (After 14 years of marriage, he still thinks I am low maintenance! Not good! Not good at all!)

    1. Stay determined, Lana! ;)
It's crazy to go back and read old posts. I started a completely different blog just to keep family up-to-date, giving those old entries a completely different feel!

  2. Woah, I had no idea you used to live in Dubai! What a life... One day when I have some time to spare, I'll have to read some of your Arabic adventures.

  4. Yo, Burwell girl: I totally stumbled on your blog via hopping through about five other blogs and saw the word Burwell. I couldn't believe it was the same Burwell I knew and loved so long ago.

Back story - I grew up in Omaha, went to several colleges - one of them being Nebraska at Lincoln. While there, I met the nicest group of guys from Burwell. Hugh Holmquist was one of them. His dad was a pharmacist I think. Being the "city kid" that I was they had to take me out to the sand hills to experience the country.

So they had me ride a shetland pony, - I'm 6'1", so that was hilariously funny to them - shoot shotguns which I had never done, and then take me up in an old vintage barnstormer airplane for barrel rolls. I will never forget their hospitality and down-home attitude, even though I lost touch with them back in 1982.

Since that time, I moved to San Diego, then got married, was in the Air Force in NY and England, got out and have lived in OH, KS, and am back where we love - California (Sacramento area).

It's funny that you're in Cali, but have spent time in Burwell and Omaha.

Anyway, long comment, but had to share.

  5. Okay, weird story time: after reading this entry, I clicked through to Manifest Vegan's Bulgogi Tofu recipe. I made it, and it was DELICIOUS. Then last week, I went to a Philly Food Swap, where I met this lovely girl named Allyson, who was swapping very yummy vegan chocolate-covered potato chips. And YEP, you guessed it-- she is Manifest Vegan! I didn't know she lived in Philadelphia!

So yet again, you've brought people together, people who lived in the same city but didn't know it! Thank you...
